Air and Ground Teams Intensify Efforts Amid Red Flag Warning in Southern Utah

PANGUITCH, UT — Firefighters are working around the clock to contain the France Canyon Fire, which has burned 2,159 acres with zero percent containment as of Monday, June 16. The fire, located near the Bryce Woodlands community and Paunsaugunt Plateau, continues to grow due to dry weather and rugged terrain that has made access especially difficult.

With fire behavior expected to increase, aerial support plays a critical role. Single engine air tankers, large tankers, and bucket helicopters are targeting the fire’s southwest flank, while crews focus on securing the southeastern perimeter to protect nearby communities.

At least five Type 1 Hotshot crews, a Type 2 initial attack crew, and multiple helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are on the scene. In total, 180 personnel are assigned to the fire, with six additional crews on the way. A helicopter base at Bryce Canyon Airport is providing water support, while both hand and mechanical fire lines continue to be built where terrain allows.

Currently, 500 acres of active fire are burning in the Black Butte area. Smoke is expected to impact Bryce Canyon National Park, Ruby’s Inn, Bryce Valley, and Escalante. The Bryce Woodlands community remains on alert, although no structures are currently threatened.

Dangerous Fire Weather

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to midnight due to high temperatures, dry air, and increasing winds. Forecasts predict winds shifting from 3–8 MPH in the morning to 12–16 MPH with gusts up to 35 MPH by afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the upper 70s to low 80s with no precipitation expected.
