District 69 Representative Candidate Davina Smith Welcomes Opponent to Race

Monticello, Utah—Utah House District 69 candidate Davina Smith welcomed her opponent to the race. She pledged to campaign with respect, toughness, and kindness as she offers her powerful vision of leadership for people of the district, the state, and the nation:

“I welcome Mr. Logan Monson to the race and I respect his public service. I believe that we both offer authentic, yet different, visions for the future of southeastern Utah. My vision will grow our economy, expand access to high-quality health care, respect rural people, honor Indigenous people, uplift communities of color, truly care for our elderly, invest in teachers and first responders, and solve land and water issues before they become intractable problems.

I am a tough opponent. As an enrolled member of the Diné (Navajo) tribe originally from Monument Valley, Utah, I come from generations who have fought for this land and the people we love. I have the courage and will of my grandmother, who once fired a .22 caliber rifle over the heads of federal agents as they tried to force us from our home and property. I have the strength and toughness of my grandfather, who worked the uranium mines and fought to make safer conditions for his fellow workers. I have the resilience of a child, who suffered from drinking well-water that was contaminated by radiation. I have the common sense of a rural resident who understands the prosperity that extractive industries bring to rural communities.

Tough does not mean unkind. Tough does not mean unfair.

Today, it seems that many of our nation’s leaders have become very good at disagreeing with each other, but have forgotten that disagreement is vital to the free exchange of ideas that makes our democracy vibrant and strong.

I believe this race can be a shining example for the state and the nation on how to run an honorable, vigorous, fact-based election campaign.

As I ask for the trust of District 69 residents and ask for their votes, I thank Mr. Monson for helping clarify the choice.
