March is national Heart Health Awareness Month. To help increase awareness, Dixie Regional Medical Center will host a seminar on Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help people learn how to stay heart healthy and what options they may have for heart treatment.
The seminar will be located in the SelectHealth Auditorium at 1424 E. Foremaster Dr. in St George. It is free to public, but those who would like to attend must RSVP by Feb. 22. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP.
The seminar features three lectures, each from a different heart specialist. Dr. Blake Gardner will speak about new treatments for peripheral artery disease. Dr. Carrie Willis will speak on caring for a loved one experiencing heart failure. And Dr. Kory U. Woodbury will address whether or not someone may need a stent or open-heart surgery.
“Decades ago, primarily what we knew about heart disease and heart attacks was that we would give an aspirin and nitroglycerin and say ‘Good luck riding out that storm,’” Dr. Willis said. “Treatment has evolved to amazing technology in heart surgery, as well as leaps and bounds in the medication.” Willis said the seminar will help families better understand the symptoms of heart failure and how to improve health without the help of a doctor.
“This is not necessarily something that is a death sentence,” said Willis. “Not a lot of people are in a stage of heart failure where they are working towards hospice or heart transplant. A lot of them just need some fine-tuning and need more expert eyes on what is going on.”
