The DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival will host its annual free community film screening Sept. 6. This year, DOCUTAH offers a drive-in movie event open to the entire southern Utah community to enjoy. The free screening of “Sinatra in Palm Springs: The Place He Called Home” will feature a live tribute concert with crooner Chris Anderson and a ‘50s costume contest. The Raven Awards for winning films will also be announced that evening, and those films will be screened Sept. 7 along with a second indoor screening of “Sinatra in Palm Springs.”

“Sinatra in Palm Springs” captures the spirit of the Sinatra era and pays tribute to the unique lifestyle of Sinatra’s Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. Steeped in affection and appreciation for the deep bond between Sinatra and these beguiling desert towns, “Sinatra in Palm Springs” tells the story of a man whose generosity and compassion for his fellow citizens had no bounds. Revealing interviews bring to life a bygone era, featuring interviews with Barbara Sinatra, Mel Haber, Tom Dreesen, Nelda Linsk, Bruce Fessier, Trini Lopez, Michael Fletcher, and many others who knew, lived with, or played with Frank Sinatra.

“We hope our audience will pull out their best ‘50s threads and get ready to ‘make the scene’ at Docutah,” said Marianne Hamilton, special events coordinator at DOCUTAH. “We want to have some extra fun at our drive-in movie about Sinatra and invite attendees to take part in our costume contest. Maybe the ladies have that crinoline petticoat and poofy skirt — maybe one with a poodle — they just couldn’t bear to part with. Gentlemen can resurrect their best rockabilly/bowling shirt and stay-pressed slacks and shades.”

Prizes will be awarded for best male, female, and couples’ costumes.

The DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival runs from Sept. 2–7 with the main festival hub at the DOCUTAH Red Cliffs Theaters and the DSU Eccles Fine Arts Center. Full information about all the films included in this year’s DOCUTAH festival, special events, schedule, and ticketing may be found at docutah.com. Tickets may be purchased online and at the Cox Performing Arts Center at DSU prior to the festival and at the Red Cliffs Theaters during the festival. Informational handouts and program books for the festival are also available at the Cox before and during the festival.
