The DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival opens the new year with a special screening of Black Outside on Friday, January 2, at 7:30 PM at Kayenta Arts Center.
The documentary follows outdoor educator and adventurer Gary Wilkerson Jr. as he examines the historic and cultural barriers that have limited access to outdoor spaces for Black Americans. Through personal storytelling and broader social context, Black Outside explores the relationship between race, recreation, and the American landscape.

The screening is part of DOCUTAH’s year-round film programming, which brings impactful documentaries to Southern Utah audiences beyond the annual festival. Known for pairing film with conversation, DOCUTAH creates opportunities for community dialogue around timely and relevant topics.
Set against the red rock backdrop of Ivins, Kayenta Arts provides an intimate setting for this thoughtful film experience. The evening invites outdoor enthusiasts, film lovers, and community members alike to engage with a story that broadens perspectives on who feels welcome in natural spaces.
