Radiation clinic holds meetings for downwinders in Hurricane and Springdale
The Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program from Dixie Regional Medical Center will hold two public informational meetings. Information will be presented about the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) law and the possible compensation available to downwinders in the area. Tuesday, March 8, a meeting will be held at the Canyon Community Center from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, a meeting will take place at the Hurricane Public Library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The term “downwinder” is used to describe the more than 60,000 people who were exposed to radioactive fallout in Southern Utah and eastern Nevada during the nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site.
Qualifying cancers include leukemia (but not chronic lymphocytic leukemia), multiple myeloma, and lymphomas other than Hodgkin’s . They also include primary cancers of the pharynx, small intestine, salivary gland, brain, stomach, urinary bladder, colon, thyroid , pancreas, male and female breast, esophagus, bile ducts, liver , gall bladder, lung, and ovary.
