Dr. A. Marc Harrison named upcoming CEO of Intermountain HealthcareThe Board of Trustees of Intermountain Healthcare has selected Dr. A. Marc Harrison to replace Dr. Charles W. Sorenson as president and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare when Sorenson retires on October 15. Sorenson will continue with Intermountain as founding director of the Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute, which is expected to open in 2018.

Harrison most recently held positions as chief of International Business Development for Cleveland Clinic, headquartered in Ohio, and CEO of the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, which is a multi-specialty hospital and part of Mubadala Healthcare’s network of healthcare facilities. At Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Harrison assembled a 3,500 member multinational workforce and oversaw all aspects of clinical and business operations for the new medical campus, which cared for patients from 31 countries in its first 10 months of operations.

Earlier roles included serving as chief medical operations officer for Cleveland Clinic where he was responsible for a broad range of clinical operations worldwide and as chairman of Pediatric Critical Care.

“We conducted a national search and were very pleased at the high level of interest in the position from talented leaders within Intermountain and around the country,” says Intermountain Board Chair Scott Anderson, CEO of Zions Bank. “Under Dr. Sorenson’s leadership Intermountain has gained a growing local, national, and international reputation as an industry leader in providing high quality healthcare. Dr. Harrison has impressive experience and a proven track record of leading health organizations and is immensely qualified to build on Intermountain’s legacy and oversee the organization as we continue the work of transforming healthcare to meet the challenges ahead.”

Harrison earned an undergraduate degree at Haverford College and a medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School. He completed a residency and an internship in pediatric critical care through the University of Utah School of Medicine, working primarily in the critical care units of Intermountain’s Primary Children’s Hospital. His wife, Dr. Mary Carole Harrison, served as the chief resident in the same program. Dr. A. Marc Harrison later received a master’s degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University and completed additional study in management at Harvard Business School.

Intermountain Healthcare is a Utah-based, nonprofit medical group of 22 hospitals and 185 clinics with about 1,300 employed physicians, a health plans division called SelectHealth, and other health services.  For more information about Intermountain, visit intermountainhealthcare.org.
