Dixie State University’s Physical Science Department is offering a Geology of the National Parks course trip from March 5 to 12 to both students and community members in celebration of the National Park Service’s 100-year anniversary. To attend the trip, community members and DSU students can register for DSU’s Geology of the National Parks course and have the option of taking only the lab or both the lecture and lab. A course fee of $600 will include transportation, lodging, entrance, and all but three meals for the eight-day trip. Anyone interested needs to register for the course by Monday, Feb. 1.
The DSU Geology of the National Parks field trip will take attendees to all Utah national parks and several state parks and will focus on the geologic processes that have shaped Utah’s landscape and environment. DSU’s Janice Hayden will be the head instructor of the trip.
“I am looking forward to facilitating this experiential learning trip, which, I feel, epitomizes the DSU ‘Active Learning, Active Life’ mantra,” Hayden said. “It will be the perfect combination of experiencing the parks, while also investigating the geologic historical significance behind it all.”
On the trip itinerary are Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands national parks along with Quail Lake, Escalante Petrified Forest, Anasazi, Edge of the Cedars, Newspaper Rock, Dead Horse Point, and Freemont Indian state parks and several national monuments.
“This is an excellent way to learn about the many local treasures Utah has to offer,” DSU Physical Science Department chair Dr. Kelly Bringhurst said. “And I can’t think of a better person from whom to learn all this than Professor Hayden.”
