Festival of the Americas Comes To The Kayenta Art Village
Celebrating the early cultures of the Americas through music, dance, fine art and unique costumes.
The Kayenta Arts Foundation (KAF) is honored to present the premiere Festival of the Americas on May 13-15, 2022. Festival of the Americas is a FREE, three-day, family-friendly, multicultural outdoor festival, produced by the Kayenta Arts Foundation.
The Festival showcases and celebrates the cultures of the first peoples of the Americas. Attendees will enjoy live music and traditional performances, such as dancing, drumming, flute. Native artisan booths will be full of paintings, pottery, fine art and more! Much of this year’s festival will focus on Native American art and culture and takes place in the outdoor setting of the Kayenta Art Village and Center for the Arts at Kayenta. The area was once the ancestral home of the Paiute Indians and showcases the stunning natural beauty of Kayenta.
The three-day festival will feature an array of cultural arts forms and customs. Included in the weekend activities are traditional performances, painting, pottery, weaving, silversmithing, traditional dance, drumming, flute, native food, weaving, and craft demonstrations.
The Festival hours are Friday and Saturday, 9 AM – 6 PM and Sunday 9 AM – 4 PM. Two special ticketed events will be held in the Center for the Arts at Kayenta building, The Opening Ceremony and Adrian Hall Trio concert.
The Opening Ceremony will be Friday, May 13, at 7:30 PM. This evening celebration will include history and background information about local tribes, the Pow Wow and its restoration, the announcement of the Tribal Festival Queen and Princess and tribal youth dances, and flute and hand drums performances. Tickets are $10 and available online.
Saturday evening, May 14th, will feature a special ticketed performance by the Adrian Wall Trio, Music from Native America, at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for students and children and available online.
Rob Goodman, President of the KAF Board of Directors explained, “The Festival of the Americas promotes collaboration between diverse cultural groups in the region. We plan on more than 40 artisans to present their work and engage with visitors about the connection of their own work to their cultural heritage. In addition, the festival will create a celebratory community hub for the understanding and appreciation of the history and cultural fabric of our shared ancient American story and the land we now live on.”
The earliest habitation of Native Americans in Utah dates back 10,000 to 12,000 years. Against the Ivins City backdrop of ancient red rock landscape, these exquisite and advanced cultures have been preserved through music, drums, dance, fine art, and sacred customs. Surrounded by the warmth of the Kayenta community, attendees will go deeper in their respective understanding of Native Americans cultures and customs.
Goodman further stated, “KAF is committed to offering visitors and residents of all ages an outdoor arts festival program that provides a safe, healthy experience for people of all ages. This event will draw together distinct tribal communities for the greater good of preserving and sharing these ancient cultures with local residents and visitors to the region.”
