Films From M.A.R.S. and Red Rock Film Festival host June events
By Matt Marxteyn
Films From M.A.R.S. and Red Rock Film Festival have several events in June from its monthly film series and contests to local passes for the first 100 residents of southern Utah. June begins with a 24-hour film contest called Adrenaline24 June 8 at 8 p.m. followed by Films From M.A.R.S. at 8:30 p.m.
There are several 24-hour film contests throughout the country. Adrenaline24 will make it easy to enter but near impossible to cheat. With Snapchat, YouTube, digital editing, and video cameras on your smart phone, making a video even in just one hour has become quite simple. Kids in elementary school do it all the time.
The contest begins at Park Discovery in Cedar City where contestants will look for a red table to receive their team, theme, and a prop they will use in their 3–5 minute film. They will submit them the next day at the Films From M.A.R.S. screening, which begins with a screening of “Cold Storage.”
Thomas Freundlich’s “Cold Storage” is a short dance comedy with no dialogue that features a lonely fisherman and his iceman buddy, whom he discovers and dances with aided by several cans of beer. The film played at last year’s Red Rock Film Festival and play again with the Adrenaline films June 9.
Next up is the deadline for the 12th annual Red Rock Film Festival June 12. Any non-studio film can be entered that was finished after Aug. 1, 2017. Entry fees vary depending on length and when the film is entered. Entries may be submitted online.
Also in June, the festival is looking for artists and filmmakers to preview films for its 12th annual festival in Cedar City. To apply, email the festival team at redvolunteer@ophilia.com.
Lastly, the festival has a special offer in June that’s too good to pass up. While attendees can purchase a $50 or $100 membership or a $250 or $350 nine-day pass, the first 100 local residents of St. George and Washington County can buy a special local weekend or weekdays pass for just $50.
The pass not only includes admission to dramatic features but also to new documentaries, comedies, and animated and student films and plenty more. The three choices are the first weekend (Nov. 2–4) or second weekend (Nov. 9 and 10) or Monday–Thursday (Nov. 5–8), which includes admission to all competition screenings, headliner screenings, orientation screenings, and short screenings to the 12th annual Red Rock Film Festival on the specified days on the pass. This pass is only sold in June and July to residents of St. George and Washington County with a legal ID. Local passes are only available in June and July.
Park Discovery is located at 2077 W. Royal Hunte Dr. in Cedar City. Red Rock Film Festival will be held at various locations in Cedar City Nov. 2–10. More information is available by calling (435) 705-5555.
