FMASU’S ELECTRIC FILM SERIES: CELEBRATING OVER A CENTURY OF FILM
ONE GLORIOUS DECADE AT A TIME!
The 501(C)(3) nonprofit, The Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah, was designed to champion, encourage, inspire, and educate filmmaking talent but it was also designed to preserve film history and the theatrical experience. FMASU (which started in 2017) strives to achieve these goals by way of a handful of film-centric events and programs throughout the year including The Desertscape International Film Festival, The Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge, The HorrorFest International Film Festival, and an upcoming collaboration with an independent filmmaking showcase called Conspiracy 25. All of these events provide a platform for storytellers but they also present a grand source of entertainment and education for filmgoers of all walks of life.
One of FMASU’s most popular programs is a free monthly cinema showcase called The Electric Film Series. This series takes place on the third Tuesday of every month and covers over 100 years of cinema, one consecutive decade at a time, over the course of a calendar year. It’s certainly no easy task selecting a single film that represents an entire decade of cinema but the programmers at FMASU have tirelessly taken the time to curate a 12-film lineup that represents a wide range of noteworthy titles from throughout the years.
Each Electric Film Series screening will include a special guest speaker, on hand to share an introduction and to lead an insightful post-screening discussion, because while the films are of the utmost importance, so are film history and context. It’s all part of FMASU’s mission to educate, entertain, and make going to the theater an event. True, one can sit at home and watch a film but the communal aspect of going to a theater is one of the purist forms of human connection and in today’s somewhat impersonal day and age, the theatrical experience is certainly something to celebrate and keep alive.

Speaking of which, what does the 2026 Electric Film Series lineup have in store for attendees? It’s quite the epic slate of films and it all kicks off on Tuesday, January 20th at 6 PM with a magical trip back to the Silent Film Era. Headlined by a 100th-anniversary screening of “The General” (starring the legendary Buster Keaton), the evening will include live piano accompaniment by the gifted Matt Szymanski as well as an intro by knowledgeable guest speaker, Jason Jackson of Red Carpet Cinema. This will be a magical night at the movies you won’t soon forget!
