In a rare opportunity courtesy of generous arts sponsors, the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, an internationally renowned contemporary dance company, will be giving a free performance in Kanab on Tuesday, March 21, at 7 p.m. in the Kanab High School auditorium.

The Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company was founded in 1964, with the 2013-14 season marking their 50th anniversary. The company was formed by University of Utah dance professors Shirley Ririe and Joan Woodbury. In addition to their combined passion for the obvious side of a dance company—teaching, choreographing, and performing—the two women also had a deep commitment to the value of dance for more than just those who aspire to dance professionally and the necessity of dance in the education of youth. For more than 50 years, the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company’s performances and educational undertakings reflect the founders’ philosophy that “Dance is for everybody.”

In June 2013, the Company welcomed New York-based contemporary choreographer Daniel Charon as the new artistic director, joining Executive Director Jena Woodbury and Education Director Ai Fujji Nelson in their commitment to follow the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company’s mission of making dance a viable part of everyone’s lives. The Company has performed in every state in the United States, as well as throughout Europe, South Africa, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and the British Isles.

The free performance in Kanab on Tuesday is sponsored by the Utah division of Arts and Museums; the National Endowment of the Arts; the Center for Education, Business, and the Arts; and the Kane County Office of Tourism.
