Friends of Gold Butte opens Mesquite office with ribbon cutting
By Aloree Smith
Friends of Gold Butte will officially open the doors to its first-ever physical location in Mesquite. The celebration will kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce and City Council member Geno Withelder Sept. 13 at 5:15 p.m. This event will take place at 12 W. Mesquite Blvd., the new home of Friends of Gold Butte.
Friends of Gold Butte is a nonprofit organization that works to promote responsible enjoyment and preservation of antiquities in Gold Butte National Monument. The organization has been locally based since 2003 but is only now opening its first physical location in Mesquite.
Gold Butte National Monument is an area that covers nearly 300,000 acres of public land just miles away from Mesquite, including the historic ghost town of Gold Butte. Visitors can see everything from barren stretches of desert to mountains punctuated with trees, sandstone, and twisting canyons. This area is perfect for those looking for a beautiful campsite and hiking, though there are no marked hiking trails as of now.
The staff and representative of Friends of Gold Butte will use the office to serve as a space to organize and prepare for volunteer projects as well as host trainings and presentations. The office will also provide general information about Gold Butte National Monument for the general public. You can find more information at friendsofgoldbutte.org.
The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce encourages everyone from the community to join us at this event to see for yourself what Friends of Gold Butte will accomplish for the future of Gold Butte National Monument. For further information, please call (702) 346-2902.
