From now until the end of October, Frontier Homestead State Park Museum will be featuring an art exhibit showcasing paintings by Travis Humphreys. An opening reception will be held Sept. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. The reception is free to the public; thereafter, the regular museum fee will apply.
Humphreys was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, but now resides in Cedar City. He began formal study with his uncle at age 13. He won many awards through high school and started selling artwork at a young age. His first gallery invitation came in 1988 after winning awards for his watercolor paintings at the George Phippen Memorial art show in Prescott, Ariz. He received scholarships and talent awards to major universities but decided to attend Brigham Young University instead. He graduated in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in illustration.
Given all these accolades, Humphreys actually considers the greatest award to be selling his artwork. He works in every common medium but prefers oil and acrylic. His pieces range from the miniature to the monumental in scale. The landscape is his dominant subject matter. He also paints murals and does one of a kind art projects for interior designers and decorators in addition to creating custom framing for artists throughout the country, a talent for which he is held in high regard.
Humphreys’ exhibit will feature about 30 small paintings that he created over the past two years in his own handcrafted frames. Most of the paintings are southern Utah landscapes. Humphreys will exchange new paintings for the initially exhibited ones throughout the duration, giving patrons a reason to return.
