In a celebration of the arts, humanities, sciences, and freedom of expression, the Future Faire in Virgin on Saturday, June 20, is being framed as a kind of “show and tell” for adults and kids alike. The event is intended to be an “arts and humanities and sciences in the park,” with an open invitation to any artist, writer, performer, scientist, or thinker who would like to set up a card table or stall for free to share their work with others, give mini-lessons, do poetry readings, and more. Not only is admission to the fair free to the public, it is also free to the demonstrators, with the condition that artwork not be offered for sale at the actual event. The Faire will take place in Virgin Town Park on 100 West (off State Route 9) from 1-4 p.m.
The Future Faire in Virgin coincides with the celebration of the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, an event that many consider the advent of the modern view of the rights of man, including the rights of free speech, the right to petition your government, and the idea that not even kings are above the law. It was on the basis of the Magna Carta that British colonists sent King George the Declaration of Independence in protest of his violation of those ancient rights.
Anyone who is interested may bring a table, pedestal, dance floor, or whatever and share their arts, skills, knowledge, or ideas. It is not necessary to be a resident of Virgin. The emphasis is on free exchange, so event organizers ask that artwork not be offered for sale, but if you are performing or conducting a mini-workshop on your craft, feel free to put out a donation hat, business cards, shop banner, etc
Free food and refreshments will be provided. Some of the activities already planned include:
– A pair of full-size color replicas of the Magna Carta and Declaration of Independence, together with their text and translations from Latin and historical background.
– Drumming circles
– Juggling lessons
– Free-style drawing lessons
– Native flute playing and lessons
– Poetry slam
– Face painting
– Live music
– A “Thousand Cranes for Virgin” table, in which lessons for folding origami cranes (or blue herons) will be given. The cranes will later be strung together as part of a project to present 1,024 cranes to the Town of Virgin as a representation of the town’s wish to become the kind of place that its citizens hope it will be and to ensure its happiness for the next 1,000 years.
The Future Faire in Virgin is sponsored by Virgin’s Future, which consists of the five sponsors of a referendum being held in the Town of Virgin June 23. Virgin’s Future will have their own table at the event with voter information pamphlets and copies of the aforementioned referendum and ordinance.
