Girls on the Run Southern Utah holds open house
By Melissa Miller
Girls on the Run Southern Utah invites community members to its open house at the Washington City Community Center to learn about its afterschool programs and the impact it has on the girls it serves. The open house is for parents who want to get their children involved, those who want to start a program at their site, and for those interested in coaching a team. The open house will be held Feb. 5 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that aims to inspire girls in third through eighth grade to be joyful, healthy, and confident. The 10-week program incorporates running to teach life skills, encourage personal development, and foster team building and community service. The program culminates with all teams participating in a 5K event.
The upcoming spring program begins March 4 and anticipates serving nearly 200 girls at 15 schools and community centers in Washington and Iron County. The nonprofit organization seeks 45 volunteer coaches to mentor small teams of 8–15 girls and who are interested in expanding its afterschool program to additional school sites. Program registration is open and accepting coach applications and site applications for the spring 2019 program season.
