On Monday, Nov. 9, Groovacious will celebrate 23 years of business with a shindig featuring a couple of mini concerts by two of its favorite Cedar City bands: Full Tilt Boogie and Wilhelm. In addition, the store will offer a 20 percent discount all day on all merchandise—excluding electronics—in gratitude to the customers who have kept it in business for all these years. There will also be some light refreshments served.
The music business has gone through many phases and changes since Groovacious—originally named “Groovacious Platters”—opened in Keizer, Ore., in November of 1992. Cassette tapes were still a hot commodity, but by that time, the compact disc had already gained a foothold in the industry, and it was by far the most popular medium. Although vinyl records seem to be making a comeback these days, back in 1992, it appeared that they were becoming a thing of the past.
After 17 years of having worked in the business for other record stores, Tim Cretsinger—along with his wife Lisa, who had worked with Tim at a store in Portland where they met—decided to take the plunge and get into the business themselves.
The couple moved from Portland to Keizer, got married, and opened the doors to their new endeavor on Nov. 9, 1992, with just a few rows of CDs and tapes, along with Tim’s record collection. Groovacious moved from Oregon to Cedar City in 2000. It recently moved from its original Cedar City location to a smaller, cozier spot. The new space does not have a stage like its earlier incarnation did, but the Cretsingers still hope to still be able to host some smaller performances anyway.
The 23rd anniversary celebration will begin with Wilhelm at 6 p.m., and Full Tilt Boogie will play at 7 p.m. The new Groovacious is located at 195 W 600 S #2. For more information, call Groovacious at (435) 867-9800.
