On Saturday, June 6, CineMast.net, The Independent, St. George Musical Theater, Riggatti’s, Redstone Olive Oil, and Megaplex Theatres will proudly present the 2015 Summer Movie Edition of the Guerilla Shorts Showcase and the Local Filmmaker Spotlight. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at Red Cliff Cinema (located behind the mall.) Tickets are only $6 (cash only) and will go on sale at Red Cliff Cinema 30 minutes before show time. And you can be a part of the action, as we will be including an “Audience Choice Award” in addition to the Jury Prize.

Let it be known that as a filmmaker myself, I have nothing but the highest praise for Youtube and Vimeo. These outlets give storytellers of all ages and skill sets an audience they might not have otherwise. Having said that, I will forever be a huge proponent of the theatrical experience. For my money, nothing beats the collective sharing of a cinematic experience with family, friends, and complete strangers in the magical environment that is the movie theater. It’s simply a sensation that I’ll never tire of.

When the Guerilla Shorts Showcase first started, it was simply designed as a means to encourage folks with an interest in filmmaking to take that all-important first step. Since the Showcase’s inception in 2005, we’ve seen a handful of Guerilla filmmakers move on to school, and some have even taken their talents to a professional level. Others have continued to take part in our challenges in an effort to hone their skill whereas some have continued making Guerilla shorts because it’s fun for them and because the joy of doing it brings balance to their hectic lives.

Our upcoming Guerilla event will showcase a collection of locally made short films from dedicated individuals of all ages and all skill sets. A few of the films were made by novices, while others were put together by filmmakers who have been doing this for quite a long time. What all of these individuals have in common is a passion for what they do. Just because this is Guerilla filmmaking doesn’t mean that any less thought or passion goes into the making of a project.

Since we are currently heading into summertime, we decided it would be fun to tie our latest Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge in with a highly anticipated summer movie season. Each filmmaking team was given a theme inspired by an upcoming summer movie. Their mission was to complete a 5-minute short film encompassing their given theme within three weeks time, using any resources available to them.  Come on out and see what these creative filmmaking teams came up with. And get in on the action by voting for your favorite film. We will offer up an Audience Choice Award to one lucky filmmaker.

Here’s a look at the line up of events for the evening.

THE 2015 SUMMER MOVIE EDITION OF THE GUERILLA SHORTS SHOWCASE– starts at 7 p.m.

THE LOCAL FILMMAKER SPOTLIGHT– starts at approximately 8:15 p.m.

– An exclusive look at “Capturing a Dream” (7 minutes)

Darren Chase and crew will share an exclusive look at “Capturing a Dream,” a special nonprofit designed to do some good in the world.

– “The Wild Misadventures of Jesse James and Billy the Kid” (5 minutes)

This quirky, heartwarming effort won first place at the 2014 Little Hollywood Shoot-Out in Kanab, UT. It features lively turns by Sheldon Demke and Stormy Thomas as two famed outlaws at odds with each other, but their rip-roaring adventure is punctuated by a most unexpected twist. It should be noted that this version of “The Wild Misadventures of Jesse James and Billy the Kid” features an original score by southern Utah-based musician Lisle Crowley.

– “Finn” (7 minutes)

In the “Little Rascals”-inspired “Finn,” two boys fight over a fish, but it’s what the fish represents that’s at the very heart of this charming gem of a short. Corbin Navarrete and Conner Bennett are positively adorable in the leads.

– “The Invitation” (13 minutes)

Shayne Cullen’s darkly funny “The Invitation” tells the tale of Katie, a naïve girl with social anxieties who gets more than she bargained for after receiving an invitation to a strange party. Shortly after arrival, Katie slowly begins to realize that this party isn’t at all what it seems. “The Invitation” stars Crystal O’Connor, Sheldon Demke, Rich Hill, Jenny Hess, Ryan Malin, and Bruce VanderWall.

Adam Mast
Adam Mast's love affair with the movies began at the ripe age of 6 after his parents took him to see a little film called Jaws at a drive-in theater in Northern California. From that moment, he was hooked. Mast began his epic stint as a film critic with The Independent back in May of 1996. At the time, the publication was still in its infancy and known as the Revolution. Through the years, Mast would go on to write for Zboneman.com before co-founding the entertainment site, Cinemast.net. His love of storytelling would also lead him to aid in the creation of the film-centric 501(C)(3) nonprofit, Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah (FMASU)--An organization primarily known for championing storytellers both locally and worldwide by way of various film-related events held throughout the year, including The Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge, Desertscape International Film Festival, HorrorFest International, and A Merry Movie Christmas. His love of cinema and the arts in general knows no bounds. Mast currently resides in St. George, UT with his lovely (and undeniably supportive) wife Tonja and their four amazing children, McKenzie, Matthew, McKian, and Mason.
