Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah breaks ground on 24th home

By Krista Longhurst

On Aug. 1, representatives from Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah, volunteers, sponsors, and future homeowners from Enterprise came together to celebrate the groundbreaking of Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s 24th home build. Last spring, Habitat acquired two lots located in the Enterprise Valley View Estates, and this is the first project the local affiliate has built in Enterprise. Habitat for Humanity is excited to branch out to other areas of southern Utah in need of affordable housing, and the home in Enterprise is just the beginning.

Emily Thomas has been selected as the newest Homeowner and expressed her gratitude to Habitat as well as to the community of Enterprise.

“I want everyone in Southern Utah to know what a wonderful, giving, supportive community there is here in Enterprise.” Thomas said. “This is an amazing place to live and I am so grateful to Habitat and everyone that will work on this house for giving me a chance to own a home in the town I love!”

A sponsored build program started with this home build. Companies and organizations are invited to join Habitat on a volunteer build day, which will make a lasting impact on their community. The sponsored build program allows organizations to engage with their employees and community members with a fun and educational team-building project, which produces tangible, long-term benefits for families in need. Sponsorships opportunities range from $1,500 to $10,000.

“Habitat for Humanity has been blessed over the years by tremendous community support,” said Kayo Skandunas, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah. “By working with Washington County and the City of Enterprise, the opportunity for home ownership will be realized for two more local families in the coming years. We are proud to continue to build locally and excited to bring Habitat for Humanity and all that it offers to Enterprise.”

Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah was established in May 1998, for the purpose of building safe, decent, and affordable housing in partnership with families in Washington County who fall between 60 and 80 percent of the area median income and this is achieved by providing zero percent interest loans. Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
