Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah breaks ground on 23rd home

By Lil Barron

Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah is proud and excited to break ground on its 23rd home built here in southwest Utah. On June 21, Habitat for Humanity staff, volunteers, donors, and sponsors as well as Washington County dignitaries took part in a ceremony introducing the newest Habitat for Humanity partner family and the place where their future home will be built.

Kasidi Havens and her four children were selected by Habitat for Humanity and have already begun working on their sweat equity hours by helping complete the construction on our last Habitat for Humanity home.

“I have been helped and uplifted every step of this journey,” Havens said. “This house isn’t just a house, it’s a new family with Habitat and for us it means community.” Havens also thanked everyone in attendance for being giving and kind and changing both her life as well as those of her children.

In the last 20 years, Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah has built 22 homes in Washington County and has been able to help over 125 family members achieve the dream of home ownership and the sense of community that comes from owning a home. Habitat for Humanity home owners have used this hand up to go back to school to better their lives and income, and their children have finished school and moved onto college, all because they felt safe, secure, and stable.

“When you become a homeowner, you become a part of something bigger, you become a community with your neighbors, the children your kids go to school with. And as we know, it takes a village, and the homeowners now have a chance to be an integral part of that village.

Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah was established in May 1998, for the purpose of building safe, decent, affordable housing in partnership with families in Washington County who fall between 60 and 80 percent of the area median income. At Habitat for Humanity, our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live; through shelter, we change lives.
