Have a great article you want to publish? Send it to us! The Independent is looking for regular contributors and columnists to write once a week or twice a month. If you are interested, submit a piece so that we can see your style. Also submit your writing subject and genre preferences. If we really like your style, we may bring you on as a regular contributor.
The Independent and SUindependent.com is now offering profit sharing with its contributors, officially beginning on July 1, 2014. The details of the profit sharing model are fairly straightforward and will be shared with each of our contributors. To be a part of this program, writers, cartoonists, photojournalists, and photographers will be required to contribute a minimum number of pieces per month, by agreed-to deadlines, and at a standard and format given.
What we are looking for: news, interviews, reviews, features, photo essays, or opinions that reveal interesting aspects of life in southern Utah. We love stories on unique subcultures, engaging community issues, and interesting local people or modern pioneers. We are interested in news, politics, culture, recreation and the environment, and good short stories or narratives about unusual people, interesting places, and unique insight into local culture.
Submission Guidelines:
• Articles should report on an interesting topic about some aspect of life in southern Utah, but we will consider timely and engaging pieces on regional, state, or national issues.
• All entries must be written from a journalistic perspective. We do not accept creative fiction, journal entries, travel logs, or poetry at this time.
• Objective, third-person accounts are generally preferable to first-person narrative.
• Articles should be concise and informative.
• Articles should not center around self-promotion.
• Articles should be based on facts, even for opinions. If applicable, cite your sources.
• Articles should be grammatically correct and carefully proofread.
• The best articles are between 600 and 1,200 words but we often print longer pieces.
• The best articles have a colorful and exciting picture or two that complement and illustrate the story. You can submit them with your story.
• We accept articles that are edgy, satirical, or humorous, and like stories that come from all angles and perspectives.
• This is a local paper with a local voice. Consider the audience and ask yourself why the reader would want to read your piece.
