Between Dec. 14, and Jan. 5, 2017, scores of volunteer birders and nature enthusiasts will take part in the longest running wildlife census on the planet. The annual Christmas Bird Count is organized by the National Audubon Society, and the data compiled are used to track the health of bird populations at a scale that professional scientists could never accomplish alone. This event is free and is open to birders of all skill levels.
Beginners will be able to join a team that includes experienced birders. Anyone unable to join a field team who lives within the boundaries of a count circle can make arrangements with the coordinator to stay home and report the birds that visit your feeders. Information on over 30 counts held in Utah can be found at utahbirds.org.
Locally, there are counts at Bryce, Escalante, Kanab, Boulder, and Glen Canyon. The National Audubon Society website, audubon.org, has a wealth of information on Christmas Bird Counts.
The local count in Kanab will be done Dec. 16 at the Kanab BLM office, located at 669 S. U.S. Route 89A. They will hand out forms, and get routes lined out, and head to the field. More information is available from the BLM office at (435) 644-1200 or Lisa Church at (435) 644-1273.
