Ms. Kate Rubalcava has been selected to lead the Utah Nonprofits Association as its chief executive officer. After a lengthy and thorough regional search, the Utah Nonprofits Association board of directors, chaired by Kasandra VerBrugghen, announced that Rubalcava will assume leadership of the association which represents over 600 nonprofit organizations in the state of Utah, beginning January 19, 2016.
Ms. Rubalcava has over a decade of community development, organizing, and education experience. She has primarily worked with under-served and underrepresented populations, including low-to-moderate income individuals and racial minorities. Ms. Rubalcava has an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. Both of which provided her with a technical and historical background in two very important components of living in a democratic society. Additionally, Ms. Rubalcava has earned a Master of Education Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy. While obtaining her advanced degree, Ms. Rubalcava had the opportunity to blend her learning of social justice, educational equity, and adult/college student development theory with practical knowledge and experience in her work with local nonprofits, school districts, government agencies, local municipalities, residents, and businesses in a way that enhanced her experiential knowledge of communities.
Ms. Rubalcava’s career, prior to joining Utah Nonprofits Association, includes leading “Earn It. Keep It. Save It.”, Utah’s statewide coalition to provide Earned Income Tax Credit outreach, free income tax preparation, and asset development opportunities for CAP Utah. She has established community schools for South Salt Lake City, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the sister island nation of St. Kitts-Nevis, and promoted higher education and worked to increase community and resident leadership at University Neighborhood Partners.
Ms. Rubalcava is also an active member in her community. She serves on the Police Civilian Review Board for Salt Lake City Police Department, is President of the Board for the English Skills Learning Center, and is a tutor through Catholic Community Services where she works one on one with a young woman enrolled in their Youth Refugee Foster Care Program. To restore balance from her activities, both professional and personal, she can be found running along the Jordan River Parkway, the 9-Line, or the Porter Rockwell trail systems.
“I am honored to be the new CEO of UNA and I look forward to continuing to be a leader in the nonprofit sector.” said Rubalcava.
“We are delighted to have found a talented leader like Kate who will bring new energy, talent and vision to the Utah Nonprofits Association,” said Kasandra VerBrugghen. “Kate knows and understands the nonprofit sector. This combined with her experience and professional qualifications will move the organization to a new level of service, collaborations and performance. The Board and staff look forward to working with Kate and supporting her vision for UNA as it will serve the entire nonprofit community as well as its over 775 members, corporate and foundation partners, and supporting organizations.”
