Kayenta presents Kids Create! summer camp
By Merrie Campbell-Lee
“Be a part of the art.” That’s the tagline for the beautiful new Center for the Arts at Kayenta, and this summer, children will have an extraordinary opportunity to “be a part of the art” in Kids Create!, a week-long workshop held right inside the beautiful black box theater in the heart of Coyote Gulch Village in Kayenta. June 10–14 from 9 a.m. to noon with a closing concert June 14 at 11 a.m.
Modeled on the Orff Schulwerk approach to learning, the workshop ensures every student finds his place and becomes an integral part of class creations. Students will sing, speak, play, move, and create. And kids of every stripe, from bashful to bold, will feel at home.
Students will learn to play Orff instruments — child-sized xylophones and metallophones — drums, recorders, and all sorts of handheld percussion instruments. In addition to music, they’ll explore art concepts related to the music. They’ll come home with a recorder and a drum they will make from a gourd and skin. Kids will also learn to weave and make acrylic pour tiles and wearable gourd art. On the last day, kids will get a chance to express their creative sides at a concert that parents and friends are invited to.
Kathleen Whiteside, the camp’s teacher and director, has been teaching music since 1984 and is a certified Orff Schulwerk instructor. She also teaches piano and choir and has been part of the staff at George Washington Academy in St. George for 13 years. Whiteside holds a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in vocal performance. She currently serves as president of the Southern Utah Orff Schulwerk Association.
“What sets this way of learning apart is freedom, collaboration in creation, multisensory learning, and respect for the child as being a capable contributor to the final product” Whiteside said.
Registration costs $58 and includes a t-shirt and all materials. Purchase tickets at kayentaarts.com, or call the box office at (435) 674-2787. The Center for the Arts at Kayenta 881 Coyote Gulch Ct. in Ivins.
