Kayenta offers an evening of jazz with Ronny Whyte

By Dawn McLain

Attention jazz lovers: The Center for the Arts at Kayenta is proud to present acclaimed New York City jazz pianist Ronny Whyte for a relaxing, romantic night of cool tunes and hot jazz Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Whyte will be joined by Glen Webb and Robbie Matheson. With this local event, Utahans can save the plane fare and join fellow jazz lovers for a night of sensual, pulsating, soul-stirring music that will leave you tingling for days.

Featured on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz on NPR, Whyte has an established reputation as one of the Big Apple’s finest jazz pianists. A far cry from his humble roots, jazz has taken Whyte from a log cabin built by his father on the outskirts of Seattle to becoming a world-renowned jazz pianist, having played across the country and abroad — Paris, Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Sao Paulo, Caracas to Johannesburg and many places in between. Now an ASCAP Award-winning songwriter, his lyric “Forget the Woman” was recorded by Tony Bennett and his music for “The Party Upstairs” won the MAC Award for Best Song of 2006.  He also produces and hosts Midday Jazz Midtown at Saint Peter’s in Manhattan, a weekly concert series. Whyte has recorded 11 albums for Audiophile, and his album “All in a Night’s Work” was selected as “Jazz Album of the Week” by the New York Times.

The Ronny Whyte Trio has performed in concert at Carnegie/Weill Hall, New York’s Town Hall, Washington’s Corcoran Gallery, and the Mellon Jazz Festival in Philadelphia. Whyte has had major engagements in New York at the Café Carlyle, Rainbow & Stars, the Oak Room at the Algonquin, and Feinstein’s at the Regency.

Whyte often makes guest appearances with symphony orchestras, playing his arrangement of “Porgy & Bess” and other Gershwin works. In the theater, he has played such diverse roles as Bobby in “Company,” Oberon in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Joey in “Pal Joey,” and Vernon in “They’re Playing Our Song.”

Tickets are $30 ($10 for students with valid ID) and can be purchased in advance online. The Center for the Arts at Kayenta is located at 881 Coyote Gulch Ct. in Ivins.
