While many celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks and festivities, the noise and chaos can be frightening—and even dangerous—for pets. Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization with roots right here in Southern Utah, urges pet owners to take simple precautions this weekend to keep their animals safe and secure.

Holiday Pet Safety Tips:

  • Create a calm space: Set up a quiet, secure area in your home where pets can retreat from loud noises.

  • Update identification: Ensure pets have current ID tags and that microchip information is up-to-date, just in case they slip out.

  • Clean up debris: Fireworks can leave behind harmful litter. Check your yard for leftover debris before letting pets outside.

  • Skip the scraps: Holiday gatherings often involve tempting food, but many table items—like onions, chocolate, and bones—can be toxic to pets.
