If art really does come from an “inner necessity,” as Swiss Surrealist Paul Klee once said, then Kolob Gallery at The Art Center in Cedar City is overflowing with the good stuff. Located at 111 S. Main Street in the heart of downtown, this artist-run gallery is one of the area’s best-kept creative secrets—and a must-see for anyone who values local art fueled by heart and soul.

Kolob Gallery is a cooperative effort of ten working artists—Arlene Braithwaite, Debbie Robb, Tiffany Marchant, Megumi Dold, Mary Jabens, Mona Woolsey, Erin Shakespear, Brian Jorgensen, Jared Barnes, and J Brad Holt—who not only display their work but also shape the gallery’s direction. “Each of us has complete freedom over our own wall space,” Holt explains. “It allows us to really represent our style and speak directly to our audience.”

Visitors will find everything from vivid Southern Utah landscapes to abstracts, still lifes, conceptual works, and more. It’s an eclectic and ever-changing collection, as these plein air veterans and studio pros frequently rotate new pieces into the gallery. “We believe in keeping things fresh,” says Holt. “Every time you visit, you’ll see something new.”

This June, Kolob Gallery launches its annual Miniatures Show on June 16—just the thing for art lovers on a budget or anyone seeking a one-of-a-kind gift. “It’s a great opportunity to take home original work at very affordable prices,” says Holt. And in keeping with its community spirit, the gallery is currently featuring guest artist Herb White, adding even more talent to the walls this month.

Sharing space with Kolob Gallery is The Art Center, a full-service framing and preservation shop. Whether you need to matte and frame your own artwork, archive family photographs, or professionally print something special, the team here can help—and at surprisingly reasonable prices. “They really do it all,” says Holt. “Framing, photographing, mounting, and more. It’s where passion meets professionalism.”

In a town rich with artistic energy and natural beauty, Kolob Gallery and The Art Center shine as examples of what happens when artists take the lead and invite others along for the ride. Whether you’re a long-time art lover or just curious to see what Southern Utah’s creative community is up to, this is the spot.
