Letter to the editor: Dear Democrats
This last Saturday, April 27, was the official launch date for the Bernie Sanders campaign. There were over 4,900 events coast to coast and at least six within a few miles of St. George. My wife and I attended one ourselves. The attendees ranged in age from mid twenties to mid sixties, the majority being over the age of 40. Around half had some experience with politics and the other half were concerned about our country and just wanted to help.
The Bernie Sanders campaign has over 1,100,000 people signed up not just to vote but to volunteer. Yesterday was the largest coast to coast political gathering in American history. He’s raised the most money without corporate fundraisers, holds a large majority of the youth vote and is the only candidate where over 50 percent of his support are people of color.
I understand you having disagreements with his policy. But I also understand it’s better to aim high, knowing that in a two party system he may not be able to get every plan accomplished. But Bernie has the energy, the decades of being right on important issues, and Bernie can beat Trump. Bernie isn’t bought by lobbyists like Trump, he wasn’t born a billionaire like Trump. Trump lied when he told America he’d get them the best healthcare, he lied when he said he’d drain the swamp only to fill it with the same CEO’s that caused the housing crisis, and he lied to America when he gave a tax break to the wealthiest in the nation, including himself and his family. The only way to counter Trump’s fake populism is with actual populism because the need is real, even though his answers were not. Bernie can beat him with a coalition of Democrats, the left, and Independents. The Republicans can scream socialism all they want, they can fill every Internet comment section with memes about Venezuela and liberal tears. But I think America will see that Bernie cares about people, and we’re all ready to grow up a little and address the problems we face together.
