Letter to the Editor: An update on the St. George Animal Shelter
The St. George Shelter has now operated under the no-kill philosophy for 1 year wherein no adoptable animal is euthanized. Yes, this has presented challenges, but we have improved the conditions for our animals such as beds and park area for the dogs and an outdoor cat area as well as free roaming indoorspace for the cats to name a few. All animals are vaccinated upon arrival and spayed or neutered beforeadoption.
Mayor Pike and the city council have organized the Animal Shelter Board which consists of numerous animal advocates, citizens and government officials including Kris Neal, Lynn Burger, Robin Kirker, Lorraine Matthie, Sgt. Ivor Fuller from the St. George Police Department, April McManus (shelter manager), Councilman Jimmie Hughes, and myself. This group consults together regularly for the welfare of the animals in the city’s care. Monthly meetings are open to the public.
The St. George Shelter has a very good relationship with our local rescue groups such as Best Friends, P.A.W.S., B.A.M., H.A.R.T., and One More Chance.
Here are some interesting statistics from just the past few weeks: 22 cats and 55 dogs entered our facility. 16 cats and 31 dogs were adopted . In addition, 3 cats and 26 dogs were reclaimed by their owners. 5 dogs were transferred to H.A.R.T. and 1 dog was transferred to B.A.M. As of today, the shelter has 21 cats and 11 dogs available for adoption.
Thanks to the dedicated advocates, concerned citizens and officials as well as the caring Shelter employees and volunteers, we are making huge strides in how we care for our animals. We invite you to come visit the shelter and consider providing a loving home to one of our well cared for pets. Todd Jones, acting Chair of the St. George Animal Shelter Board and a resident of St. George.
