To the younger voters of Washington County:
Much has changed in our society in the past 50 years—in fact it is a different world with many opportunities, yet many conditions very troubling. You are faced with new challenges that are unprecedented for our country. In truth, your elders have not been good stewards for your future, and that is most regrettable for it is not of your making. Some of the major challenges you are inheriting because of past neglect, incompetence and outright dishonesty are: our unconsciousable national debt; the fragmentation of our social safety net; the hollowing out of the middle class; income stagnation, wage decline and loss of appealing employment opportunities; abuse of our environment; a reckless foreign policy.
As remote and unappealing as it may seem, I would urge you to become more knowledgeable and get involved with what is happening around you and in the world—not the least of which being Utah State and local politics. I believe most of us who are fortunate to live in Washington County would like to maintain the quality of life we have for as long as possible.
Eventually there will be 1,000,000+ people living here in the St. George Metro-area. I would like to see that come much later, rather than sooner. However, the moneyed interests (who I label the Growth/Promotion Machine), have been in control of the local public agenda for the past 30+ years, and continue to prime the growth pump in every conceivable way. These folk are more interested in financial gain, prestige and exploitation of our environment, rather than treasuring and protecting what we have. It is far past time for this to begin to change. (If you think bad air is a concern now or traffic congestion a headache, wait until our population doubles).
You have an opportunity to help bring some fresh air to our area by voting this coming November 4th General Election. Please make the effort to do so, and forget about partisan politics. And for a new Vision for Dixie and Washington County, I would encourage you to take a look at voting for Paul Van Dam for County commissioner. He in one who embraces such a vision, and you will not find a more knowledgeable, honest and sensible person running for public office. Take the opportunity to meet him in person.
Remember the words of the song: “This Land Is My Land, This Land is Your Land”—it doesn’t belong to the local Money Changers! (I have faith in you in doing a better job than those that have come before you).
