I’m supporting Nate Caplin for Washington County Attorney.
I’ve been close to him and his family for years and have admired Nate’s love of history and commitment to the law ever since I’ve known him. Initially I was going to stay neutral on this race, because I know and greatly respect both Nate and our current county attorney, Brock Belnap.
But after listening to Nate at an event just after the Republican Convention, I was really impressed with his passion and ability to express what he believes in. It caught my attention in a new way. I then agreed to meet with Nate. An hour or so later, I was convinced that Nate was my choice for county attorney. Here are four reasons why:
1. Anyone who followed my race for mayor knows that I place a high value on PLANNING. Nate emphasizes being prepared for legal challenges-planning ahead for key issues that the county will certainly face such as public land concerns and threats to our constitutional rights. It’s not a matter of IF these kinds of things will come up again, it’s only WHEN, and how prepared we’ll be to respond. A proactive approach is extremely important to Nate, and that resonates with me!
2. A second focus of mine is LISTENING. Nate has indicated his intent to establish a county-wide volunteer council to listen to citizen input and concerns related to the county attorney’s office. At the City of St. George, we’ve already seen the benefit of allowing more opportunities for public comment at our meetings, being more accessible as a mayor and council via our new website, and being more active on social media, text, and email. Nate Caplin’s promise to listen appeals to me as a citizen.
3. I am excited about Nate’s zeal for the Constitution. I realize there is a day-to-day reality that sets in for any elected official, but if we aren’t grounded on firm principles right off the bat, with high ideals and lofty goals, what will we end up achieving? For a position that is focused on our legal system, I want our county attorney to have a strong knowledge of, passion for, and focus on the Constitution. I know that Nate Caplin does!
4. In Utah’s Dixie we have a history of working together to accomplish difficult tasks. With Nate’s vision and legal leadership, together we will accomplish great things as well! If we are again proactively working together as local citizens in partnership with surrounding counties and the state of Utah, Nate and I believe we will be much stronger in the challenges that come our way. We will accomplish more as we lock arms going forward.
I will be voting (early) for Nate Caplin to be our next Washington County Attorney!
