New St. George Children’s Choir holds auditions
This fall marks the debut season of a new musical group in town, the St. George Children’s Choir, which will hold auditions this August

Since the founding days of our community, music has played an important role. This fall marks the debut season of a new musical group in town, the St. George Children’s Choir. The children’s choir was conceived by me and another member of the St. George Chamber Singers, Rachel Cox. We saw it as an opportunity to give children in the community early exposure to fine choral music.
What makes this new choir unique is its focus on classical repertoire, vocal technique, and solfege. Rachel Cox, who holds a master’s degree in vocal performance and pedagogy and a minor in choral conducting from Brigham Young University, will serve as the director of the choir. She remembers the powerful experience of singing in a children’s choir as a young girl and considers it influential in her choice to pursue a musical career. The choral staff will also include Harrison Budge as assistant conductor and Cindy Coombs as the choir accompanist.
According to board members, there has been a very positive response from the community so far. Parents in St. George have been waiting for an opportunity like this for their children. Even before a formal announcement was made, many families asked to be placed on a list to audition.
Children ages 9–13 are invited to audition for the St. George Children’s Choir and can sign up under the children’s choir tab at stgeorgechambersingers.org. Auditions will be in a group format and are scheduled for Aug. 23. No prepared piece is required. Rehearsals will be held Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 6 at a private residence in southeast St. George. Tuition will be $300 per year (a limited number of scholarships may be available). Questions can be directed to stgeorgechildrenschoir@gmail.com.
Not only are the children who join the choir in for a treat but also community members who choose to come and be part of the audience. The St. George Children’s Choir will share the stage with the St. George Chamber Singers at the newly remodeled Mormon tabernacle, the Eccles Performance Hall at DSU, and other concert venues this season. The choir has also made plans to collaborate with other groups in the area, including Dixie Strings and the St. George Opera. Most concerts will be free and open to the public. More information, including fall and spring concert dates, can be found at stgeorgechambersingers.org.
