In response to a report of a suspect who was allegedly sitting on his front porch waving a gun around, Cedar City Police were dispatched to the area of 220 N. 1400 West in Cedar City on Sunday, May 10, at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Cedar City Police Officer Jimmy Roden said that authorities are now on the lookout for the suspect who is reported to be a Hispanic male in his 30s.
Earlier, when police initially arrived on scene, the suspect was no longer outside on the porch, but he came back out when officers arrived at 10 p.m.
Officers reportedly began trying to talk with the suspect, but he fled back inside the home, at which time the police set up a containment around the area, Roden said. Authorities spoke with family members who allegedly said the suspect did have a handgun and was intoxicated.
The SWAT team entered the home at approximately 11:30 p.m. After searching the house and the area, they found that the suspect had fled.
“Officers searched the area they contained when they first got here, and he was not in that area. So he’s not here,” Roden said.
The containment has since been taken down, and the SWAT team has been reported to have left the scene. Roden said that patrol will remain there and on the lookout for the suspect until he is found.
“Officers will monitor and maintain some presence here throughout the night, and we’ll submit it for a warrant for his arrest for some misdemeanor charges,” he said. “We want to make sure he’s safe as much as anything. An intoxicated guy with a handgun—you never know. We’re not sure why he was upset.”
Authorities still consider the suspect armed.
The story will continue to be updated as news develops.
