Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument fire managers are planning to conduct prescribed burning near Mount Dellenbaugh in late October, if weather and fuel conditions allow. Preparation, ignition, and monitoring of the higher elevation burns (Green Springs North – 741 acres; Yellow John West – 220 acres on NPS land and 100 acres on BLM land; Horse Valley Meadow – 211 acres) are expected to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 21 and continue through Tuesday, Oct. 28.
The prescribed fires are intended to decrease future wildfire risk and protect cultural and natural resources within the monument. The managed burning will also restore fire to the fire-adapted ecosystem, reducing the density of juniper and brush species, promoting conditions that allow for growth of native grasses and forbs, and increasing native plant diversity.
Prescribed fires must meet certain weather-related and environmental factors prior to ignition. National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management fire staff will manage and monitor the prescribed fire activity, and smoke may be present for several days in this remote area. Smoke emissions will be managed in accordance with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality regulations.
No road closures are anticipated, but public access may be restricted during ignition and periods of active fire spread to ensure safety. Signs will be posted to notify the public. Smoke may be present for several days and could reduce visibility along roads in this remote area. Please use caution when traveling in the area of the fire.
