PUBLISHER’S PERSPECTIVE
By Josh Warburton
Another month gone by so quick. Seems like I just work and, lately, play lots of music and not a heck of a lot else. Then, suddenly, the month is over and we’re putting another paper to bed.
As usual, this paper and the business itself continue to evolve. I’m excited to announce that my brother Ben has come to work with us as our new chief advertising representative. He brings years of professional experience as well as fresh energy and ideas that have already impacted the operation.
In our continual process and quest to improve and evolve, this edition contains some really special features – so many, in fact, that this issue boasts possibly the highest number of original, staff-penned articles we’ve ever run. Included among them, we’ve put together an exposé on the burgeoning tattoo scene here in So. Utah (check it out on page 4). And this month’s “Southern Exposure” section, chockfull of original human interest articles, is one of the largest we’ve ever had.
We also get to reintroduce a feature unique to The Independent – something only we produce … for you! Our annual Spring/Summer Festival Guide appears on page 15 and includes a rundown of the great music festivals within a comfortable day’s drive of St. George. Since these multiday trips need some pre-planning, we’ve listed a comprehensive schedule covering the next few months.
I myself will be attending some of these festivals to perform with my “band,” We Are Mirrors, including Groovefest, Roots of the Rocks and Zion Canyon Music Festival, and I’ll be attending some of the others just as a music lover.
For those of you interested in checking out We Are Mirrors live, we have four shows locally in May. On Thursday, May 16, we will perform a free concert, along with Beanz & Wheels, as part of the Southern Utah Songwriters Association concerts, which happen every Thursday evening in May at 7 p.m. in Ancestor Square. We have a piece on that series on page 16. Then, on the following two evenings (May 17 and 18), we have been asked to open up for Salt Lake area breakout artists Bullets and Belles in Kayenta. You can also read about them on page 16. Finally, on May 25, we’ll play at Jazzy’s Rock N Roll Grill with our friends and respected fellow local performers Whiskey Tooth. Our plans are to have our EP ready for sale for those shows.
Enjoy the nice May weather and we’ll see you at a show!
