PUBLISHER’S PERSPECTIVE
By Josh Warburton
LIVE MUSIC, LIVE MUSIC AND MORE LIVE MUSIC! That’s the theme of this here piece, and of this issue of The Independent as a whole. It seems there is quite the scene developing here in ol’ Southern Utah as of late. New this month, St. Helen’s in Washington is now having live music every Thursday and Friday, highlighting some of the hi-caliber acoustic acts in the area in a small, intimate setting. In addition, Southern Utah Songwriters Association (SUSWA) will kick off the long anticipated Spring Concert Series at Ancestor Square, starting earlier this year and with twice as many shows: two months’ worth starting on April 18th and featuring many of the best-known songwriters in the area. The City of St. George and City of Hurricane will each open their Concert in the Park series this month, as well.
Kicking off more live music last month was 25 Main, located in downtown St. George. They’re currently on schedule to have live music the first and third Fridays each month, and their neighbor Cappaletti’s has made plans to feature a live instrumental performer once a month, as well. Continuing to stoke the local music scene are recent mainstays Jazzy’s Rock N Roll Grill and their neighbor, just blocks away, George’s Corner. Jazzy’s continues with its Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble band competition, now in round two, Saturday nights through April and coming to a climax on May 4 for the finale. My group, We Are Mirrors, will perform as part of that second round on April 27, if you’d like to come check us out. We’ll also play George’s on April 6.
Dennis and the Artiste Sanctuary Series continue with great success at the incredible St. Jude’s Church. I’ve had the good fortune to make it to a couple shows there this last month and look forward to many more. And check out our newly enhanced “Local’s Guide to Zion/Springdale” – it’s a really functional guide to Zion Canyon and features more info on events, including Willie Waldman at the Bit and Spur.
The more successful these venues and restaurants find live music to be the more they will continue to have it, so I encourage all of you to GO SEE LIVE MUSIC!! See you at a show, and happy reading!
