Red Rock Film Fest Issues Open Call For Entries

More Events Coming To Homestead

Southern Utah’s 18th Annual Red Rock Film Festival has opened the call for entries for its 2024 season and extends its relationship with Southern Utah’s Frontier Homestead State Park. With a positive reaction to the Homestead, the Festival will return in the fall, and plans are being made to add another venue at the park. Director Kevin Sharpley of the animated film “Above Ground” said, “I loved Red Rock Film Festival; it was so awesome and really gave a feel of the place integrated into the festival.”

The outside courtyard has undergone improvements to its stairs as a venue for weddings and other events, and the Festival plans to continue improvements to the indoor theater, having already installed some theater seats as part of the Festival’s outreach program.

Park Manager Giani Julander said, “The theater seats make it comfy and enjoyable for guests watching our informational films. We’re working on additional lighting to accommodate multiple uses. Soon, people should be able to reserve the space for small events and gatherings.”

January 11 is the next deadline to enter the film competition, and all genres are considered. Both professional and first-time filmmakers can submit their features and shorts by length at filmfreeway.com/RedRockFilmFestival with various entry fees. The Festival continues its categories of Animation, ScreenDance, Documentary, Experimental, Dramatic Fiction, Music Video, Virtual Reality, and categories found in the Custom Form section of the application.

In addition to the professional international films, the Festival also has Collegiate and Utah Filmmaker subcategories and last year’s addition of Film Trailers, which may be submitted as a separate film at filmfreeway.com/UtahFilmMarket. The Festival announced they will no longer host the Young Filmmaker category during the Festival.

Fans can catch some of the Festival’s older films, which have just recently been released, such as 2022’s “In Her Name” on  Tribeca Channel, Roku, Fire, and Apple TV. The film, directed by Sarah Carter (cast member of “Rogue” and “Falling Skies”), earned four nominations at Red Rock and won a Special Achievement Award for Ensemble Cast in a Fiction Feature.

Red Rock will also be screening some of its previous films on Friday afternoon, January 5, at the Frontier Homestead State Park at 635 N. Main St. in Cedar City. Visit redrockfilmfestival.eventive.org/schedule to find more events as they are announced.
