The IndependentWritten by Heather McNamee

When Josh Warburton left a message on my phone the other day, I saw it as I was leaving work. The message was from Utah. I thought, “Who would be calling me from Utah that isn’t my family?” I was intrigued and listened to the message.

Josh said hello and stated his name, and I had an ember of recognition. He said, “The Revolution is celebrating its 20th anniversary,” and everything started flooding back to me. I remembered Josh and his long blond hair. I remembered a time in my life when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with myself. I had moved from Salt Lake City to live with my family, who had moved to Santa Clara, just outside of St. George. At the time, I was looking for interesting experiences in St. George. I felt like trying out new things. I think the desert makes me feel that way. I tried out things to keep me occupied. I worked at Dixie Nutrition. I went to whatever music shows were happening, and I took the radio class at Dixie College so I could have my own radio show on KRDC.

And somehow I met Josh. He and I could not remember how. It may have been through Mike, who also worked at Dixie Nutrition. I remember going to one show with Mike, but I don’t remember writing anything. Josh sent images of the first issue of The Revolution, and apparently I did write things — and my pen name was Pea. Oh, and I really sucked. Was there an editor?

I am so excited for Josh and very proud to have been a part of the creation of this independent rag down in Southern Utah. How fun!
