If you’re looking for the ultimate in cinematic cult viewing on the big screen this October, look no further! In 1975’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” a newly married couple (played by gorgeous Susan Sarandon and a nutty Barry Bostwick) seek shelter at an isolated castle belonging to one Dr. Frank-N-Furter (played to the unforgettable hilt by a positively charismatic Tim Curry). Once inside the castle, these happy newlyweds find their lives turned upside down as they come face to face with an odd assortment of colorful misfits, including Riff Raff (the great Richard O’Brien, who also wrote this offbeat rock opera), Magenta (the magnetic Patricia Quinn), Columbia (the eccentric Nell Campbell), and rocking biker Eddie (played by a young and vibrant Meat Loaf). This film goes from strange to ape-shit crazy in a matter of minutes, and the entire experience is punctuated by a plethora of quirky but amazingly catchy rock tunes.

And just because this is sleepy little St. George, don’t think for a second that this will be some second-rate, rinky-dink, watered-down screening. Nope! Southern Utah does “Rocky Horror” up right! We’re talking dress-up, props galore, and audience participation on an epic scale! Given that “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is bound to sell out, you’ll probably want to arrive early anyway.

Hot on the heals of Stage Door’s Production of “Young Frankenstein” comes the film that started it all! Mel Brooks’ silly, bawdy, and righteously hilarious homage to old-school monster movies stars the legendary Gene Wilder as an eccentric scientist who, through the aid of a hunch-backed, wide-eyed goofball called Igor — sorry … It’s pronounced eye-gore — sets out to bring a stitched-together corpse back from the dead. As it turns out, that lumbering, misunderstood corpse happens to be a pretty good song-and-dance man! “Young Frankenstein” is comic timing at it’s best, but it certainly helps that this movie is headlined by the likes of Wilder, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Terry Garr, and Clori Leachman.

Back in the mid-80s, Muppet veteran and Yoda master Frank Oz called the shots on this big-screen musical adaptation of a Roger Corman-produced B-movie classic. The end result is a wildly entertaining comedy about a meek flower-shop employee and the man-eating plant that threatens to destroy mankind as we know it. The songs are fantastic, the puppetry responsible for bring Audrey II is nothing short of brilliant, and the performances (led by Rick Moranis and a cute, squeaky-voiced Ellen Greene as the object of his affection) are pitch perfect. The film is also peppered with a wonderful roster of bit players including John Candy, Bill Murray, Jim Belushi, Christopher Guest, and a charismatic Levi Stubbs as the voice of Audrey II. And of course, you can’t talk about “The Little Shop of Horrors” without talking about Steve Martin’s scene-stealing work as a dentist with a talent for causing things pain! High energy and brilliant! If you saw SGMT’s production of this show a couple of months back, then you already know this movie is a must!

See these films the way they were meant to be seen — on the big screen!
