November is prime time for wildlife watchers and photographers to catch a glimpse of Utah’s mule deer as they move to lower elevations and begin their breeding season. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is inviting the public to experience this natural spectacle during a free wildlife-viewing event on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 3–7 PM, at the Nash Wash Wildlife Management Area, east of Thompson Springs in east-central Utah.
Deer mating season—known as “the rut”—takes place in November, when bucks are especially active as they compete for does. This makes them particularly fun to observe, often engaging in sparring matches or close interactions that showcase their wild behavior.
“The Nash Wash WMA provides crucial winter range habitat for deer as they prepare for winter, and it is also home to other wildlife species,” said DWR Regional Outreach Manager Brandon Behling. “While visitors will likely have a fairly close view of the deer, it’s important to maintain a safe distance—especially during mating season, when bucks can become very aggressive.”

Visitors should be able to view deer safely from their vehicles as they drive along maintained dirt roads throughout the area. The event is weather-dependent, as rain or snow can make the road impassable, but four-wheel drive is not required under normal conditions.
Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars or spotting scopes, cameras, water, warm clothing, and snacks. There are no restroom facilities at the site.
While admission is free, the event is limited to 75 people and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested should register via Eventbrite to reserve their spot.
Wildlife Management Areas like Nash Wash are essential to protecting Utah’s wildlife habitats, helping to minimize conflicts with private property and supporting critical winter range for deer and other big game species. These lands are funded by proceeds from hunting and fishing license sales.
