ST. GEORGE, UT – June 3, 2023. The Independent’s Southern Utah, Pet Adoption Guide features pet adoption options from various animal shelters throughout southern Utah. Your new best friend is waiting for you!

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located five miles north of Kanab at 5001 Angel Canyon Road. All adoptable cats and dogs are spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on vaccinations. If you have questions about a specific pet or the adoption process, please email adoptions@bestfriends.org. If you’d like to apply to adopt one of these featured pets, click the link to their bio where you will find the adoption survey.

Mr. Crosby

“I have met some folks who say that I’m a dreamer”. Our Mr. Crosby could be singing this tune just like Bing did.

He is a lovely, easy-going guy looking to find his special other. Crosby loves his long walks around the sanctuary. He is so engrossed with all the smells and sniffs that when offered a treat he casually ignores it and keeps on sniffing. Even when other dogs are passing by his nose is to the ground.

Did someone mention a car ride? Crosby is your fella ready for an adventure. He enjoys his time in the car keeping his eye out for interesting sights to focus on. Crosby is a lovable guy who would truly enjoy the company of someone to share life’s adventures with.
Crosby has a generous sponsor that is willing to cover a portion of his adoption fee(s).

Gooseberry

Gooseberry is a sensitive guy who is looking for a patient adopter who will give him some time to settle into his new home. He is still young with lots of energy, and toys and treats are the way to his heart! If you’re looking for a low-maintenance cat who will give you plenty of space, Gooseberry might be the one for you!

Curly Sue

Curly Sue is one of the most interesting and unusual horses we’ve ever met. She is a Missouri Fox Trotter with a rare recessive curly gene which causes her coat to be very curly and also means that she doesn’t grow much mane or tail. She has a few minor health issues, but she is one of the friendliest, sweetest girls and a joy to have around. She was ridden at one time but is a bit neurological which makes her stumble when ridden so we just consider her a pasture pal these days. She’s a fan favorite of visitors and volunteers because she loves to be groomed, loves to interact with people, and has quite a fun and quirky ‘horsenality.’ She is getting to be a senior (born in 1998), but has a lot of love left to give. If you need some extra joy and laughter in your life, Curly Sue might be just the gal for you!

Mary Jane

This darling, bashful girl was found as a stray in southern UT and came to Best Friends summer of 2021. Mary Jane was born in 2019 and is all black with perfect manners and adorable grunts. Mary Jane needs a forever home with another pig and a family who will help her grow more confident, since we know underneath her reticence there is a sassy gal.

Luke Skyclucker

Yup, you read that right! Luke Skyclucker is one with the Force! Luke was born on May 4th, 2021, so he quickly earned his Jedi namesake here at Wild Friends! This young rooster is blossoming into a beautiful little man, but he hasn’t found his forever home yet. As he is still a youngling, Luke would integrate beautifully into a flock, and we’d love to see him join a bunch of ladies for him to look after. If you’re interested in having Luke Skyclucker join your Council, email wild@bestfriends.org or fill out his application today!

Donna

Oh, Donna! This little gal came to Best Friends in fall 2022. Donna loves people and asks for attention anytime, anywhere. She loves to talk and hang out with her goat buddies in the sun. Donna needs a forever home with lots going on and a family with lots of love to give. Donna is bonded and must be adopted with her daughter, Pumpkin Spice.

Teddy

Hi, my name is Teddy, I’m an 8-year-old male chihuahua mix. New people and things scare me, and I prefer a home without children. With a home environment full of love and patience I can become quite a loving friend. I’m housebroken, (learning the doggie door). After getting to know you I will become very loyal, affectionate, and friendly. I do like other doggy friends. If you love a challenge and are looking for the dog of a lifetime and think you can handle me being a bit of a grouch, apply now to adopt me. Thanks, Teddy

Comet

Meet Comet, a delightful kitten with a name as bright as his personality. His curious nature leads him on countless adventures, but he’s also happy to snuggle up and enjoy a cozy nap.

Get ready to fall in love with this little ball of energy!

Sputnik

Meet Sputnik, a charming black kitten who is as cute as she is brave. Despite her small size, Sputnik is not afraid to explore new places and meet new people.

With her glossy black fur and bright, curious eyes, she is sure to steal your heart. Get ready to fall in love with this fearless feline!

Luna

This lynx point beauty was left in a box outside our door. Luna is a little shy, but she does enjoy head scratches.

She is independent and enjoys afternoon naps after spending the morning bird-watching. Luna is house-broken and would be good in a home with other cats or alone.

Luna

Luna is a quiet, thoughtful girl who, once she gets to know you, will smooch and happily show you her tricks.

She is looking for a caring and compassionate home that will help build her confidence and understand she is a bit shy when meeting new people.

Lucas

Lucas can be a bit sensitive and it may take time for him to settle into your life with you. Once he feels more secure there’s no doubt that he’ll be playful and active. He would do best with older children who can respect his boundaries and be patient with him while he settles in.

With patience and lots of treats, of course, Lucas will open up and become a great addition to the group. He’ll need daily exercise and interactive play time with you.

Lucas has lived in a backyard and is not comfortable being inside a home at this time. He is not house-trained. He loves attention, quiet, and just chilling.

Joey

Joey is a very handsome shepherd mix puppy, who came to the shelter with 5 brothers and sisters. Joey will need to be socialized with other pups and given opportunities to exhaust his puppy energy.

He will need to be taken out to potty every few hours…even during the wee hours of the night. He will definitely need a patient and loving family to work with him! Also, because he is still a pup, he can learn to get along with children and other animals.

Chandler

I’m Chandler! I’m an exuberant puppy with a constantly wagging tail and a huge grin on my beautiful face. My eyes sparkle with glee because I love absolutely everybody I meet and everyone who meets me loves me right back.

Since I’m so young I have lots of energy, and I’m strong too – the volunteers are helping me learn good manners BUT everything is so much fun I will need lots of reminders. I’m smart and enjoy learning tricks.

I  came to the shelter with 5 brothers and sisters. Oh, and I will need to go out and go to the bathroom every 2-3 hours. I sometimes have to go at night, too. I hope you don’t mind if I have to wake you up to take me out. I am still pretty young.

Monica

This striking lady in black is Monica! This perky-eared pup is loving and extremely energetic! She needs a very active household with older kids she can’t accidentally knock over.

Monica is still super young, and oh, so athletic… she will blossom with training, plenty of exercise, and loving supervision like most developing exuberant beings. She’s good around other dogs as she came to the shelter with 5 brothers and sisters.

This gorgeous girl is ready to share all her joy and affection. She will need to go out and go to the bathroom every 2-3 hours. She will sometimes have to go at night, too. She hopes you don’t mind if she has to wake you up to take her out as she is still pretty young.

He is friendly with cats and sometimes he’s a little too happy to try and play with them. He does prefer to be the only dog in the home so he can give lots of love to his family.

Put your application in soon because he won’t be available for long!

Riley

Riley is a female Lab/Mastiff mix and is about 7 weeks old. She is ready to go home and will be spayed when she is old enough.

She is currently in foster and can only be seen by people with an approved application.

She will be a great family dog with training and love.

Po

Po is a female 7-week-old purebred Border Collie. She is playful, sweet, and loves everyone.

TJ

TJ is a 5-year-old handsome guy. His best friend was a dog and he would like to have another friend. He’s a very sweet cat who loves pets.

He is a very chill cat and doesn’t need a lot to be happy. Come into PAWS and meet this great cat!

Mars

Mars is about 2 ½ years old and is a medium hair Torti. Like all Tortoiseshell kitties, she has torti-tude (you know what I’m talking about). She is a sweet and playful cat and loves cuddles and pets.

She is about 8 pounds. Come meet her in the PAWS Cat Room. You will want to take this one home with you!

Sadie

Hi I am Sadie, a gorgeous 3 ½-year-old Calico/Tabby mix. I am super sweet and love humans, and other cats and I love a running faucet.

I am not afraid of getting wet in order to get my water and I will be sure to always make you laugh with my cute antics. I’ll be waiting to meet you in the PAWS Cat Room.

Macy

Macy is a small/medium mix approximately 30 pounds. She is approximately 3-4 years old. She can be a little shy at first but warms up quickly. Macy is NOT comfortable around young children.

This blond cutie is a good girl on the leash and likes long walks. She would do well in an active, adult-only home. Macy would love to have a home where someone is home with her most of the time.

She does well with other dogs. Macy is spayed and up-to-date with her vaccinations. She absolutely loves DogTV! This girl is paws-itively perfect and would love a home of her very own.

Quincy

Although she isn’t doing the full husky howl yet, baby Quincy is already very talkative and she has plenty of important things to say.

Born May 31st, she’s almost … but not quite … house trained. She loves water and would be so happy with an adopter who doesn’t mind snuggling a wet girl! She has fun with dogs of all sizes and even gets along with cats!

Quincy’s going to make a great family dog but her puppy teeth are razor sharp and she likes to bite so she should be fully supervised around kids. She needs lots of chew toys until those big-girl teeth come in.

Bing and Chunk

Brothers Bing and Chunk were surrendered together and have rarely been apart since they were born 2 years ago and, although we would love for them to be adopted together, we think they’ll be fine separately.

Bing, named for his beautiful Bing Crosby eyes, is energetic, playful, and loves to chew (antlers and durable toys preferred). He also enjoys cuddling and giving kisses. Bing has some fear of riding in cars and freezes up and doesn’t want to get in. However, after just a few trips to the dog park with our fabulous volunteers, he’s already becoming more relaxed and has a great time once he gets there. Trips to other fun places should help him continue with his progress.

Chunk is a big softie who, as his name suggests, loves his food and very much looks forward to mealtime but he does fine eating with other dogs and has never shown any food aggression. He loves his snacks!

Both pups are good with other dogs, cats, and kids and will make a great addition to an active family. As puppies, Bing and Chunk may do better with older children who will make sure not to leave toys laying around. (Did we mention both do love to chew and will need supervision since they will swallow toys if allowed.) Both Bing and Chunk would benefit from some training as they can jump and be mouthy when excited and haven’t had much experience walking on a leash. They need a loving family with room to play and time to help socialize them.

Izzy

One-year old Izzy is such a happy girl. She adores everyone (ok, we don’t know about cats yet) and loves to romp with kids, other dogs, or by herself if no one else is available.

Izzy is housebroken, spayed, microchipped, and is fully vetted. This super-sweet girl is anxious to begin her new life with a special person or family that adores her. She’s super smart and has a lot of puppy energy still so might do best with a family with kids and/or other dogs and would love a big yard to explore.

Roxy

Roxy needs a playmate!  This girl is so affectionate, full of life, and smart, smart, smart!!! She wants nothing more than get outside and play ball, tug, you name it–she just wants to play!

Unfortunately, life changes didn’t allow pretty Roxy to stay with her family and she has to be re-homed. She’s a wonderful girl (did we mention that she’s smart?) who needs someone with an active lifestyle and time to help develop her mind. She would probably be a great agility dog, frisbee fetcher, and/or running/hiking partner. And once she’s worn you out, she’ll snuggle up to you on the couch for cuddles and cookies. (Exercise and cookies- you can’t lose!) And can you imagine gazing into those gorgeous eyes every day?

Dash

Some Native American cultures believe having heterochromia (one blue eye and one brown) means one can see heaven and earth at the same time. They refer to this as having Ghost Eyes and beautiful Dash definitely has them. And if his eyes don’t melt your heart, his cute little nose will! Not only is he stunning, but he’s also a total love bug who will melt right into your arms.

Dash was dumped at Parowan Gap and lived on his own for at least two weeks. One of the local families put food out for him until he became brave enough to be coaxed inside where he immediately found the couch. He was good with their kids and dogs.

Dash is young (we’re guessing six months to a year) and has a lot of energy. He likes to play with other dogs but can be enthusiastic so he’ll do best with some training. He’s afraid of loud noises and sudden movements and terrified of water from a hose. Who knows what this sweet boy went through before he was left to fend for himself? He deserves so much better.
