The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a red flag warning which will include parts of southern Utah. The warning is in effect from Friday, Sept. 4, at 10a.m. to Saturday, Sept. 5, at 10 p.m. A red flag warning means that extreme fire conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly occur.
The southern Utah red flag warning indicates a combination of possible strong winds, warm temperatures and low relative humidity that can lead to extreme behavior if a fire were to ignite.
According to the red flag warning, the low relative humidity is estimated to be anywhere from 10 to 15 percent in the afternoons in southern Utah. Humidity or moisture is not expected to recover overnight, leaving the fire fuels especially vulnerable to fire.
The red flag warning affected areas are: The Salt Lake Desert, The Central Utah West Desert, the Color Country West Desert and the Mohave Desert.
Winds are forecast to be coming out of the south with speeds from 25 to 35 mph, with wind gusts as high as 50 mph. Winds are expected to develop on Friday and then decrease overnight, increasing again during the day on Saturday. Even stronger winds are forecast for Saturday.
Extreme caution is advised.
