Fall in southern Utah means corn mazes, changing leaves, and a healthy dose of improv. So U Comedy Theater kicks off the season with its annual Spooktacular Improv Show, inviting audiences to lean into costumes, candy, and quick wit at the Electric Theater Center (upper room 2).
On Saturday, October 18, the troupe serves up tricks and treats in a one-of-a-kind, audience-fueled show. Performers will be decked out in Halloween costumes, and audience members are encouraged to dress up too. Wear a costume for a ticket discount and jump into the costume contest for prizes. So U’s October calendar also includes a show on Saturday, October 4, with the same format: a family-friendly performance at 7 PM, then an Uncensored show at 9 PM for grown-ups only.

So U is growing its stage, and new performers are welcome. Troupe auditions are set for Monday, November 3. Anyone curious about improv can warm up at weekly open community practices, Mondays at 7 PM at the St. George Rec Center. For those still building skills, So U offers Improv 101 as part of its education mission. The fall course is full, but another block is planned for spring.
Improv education is for more than performers. Current Improv 101 student Ryan Emery shared, “I first got into improv because it’s a form of acting, and I’ve always wanted to try acting but was too shy growing up. I never did theater or anything like that in school. I also liked the idea of learning to think on my feet and just roll with things. Being part of the group has been a great creative outlet. It has helped me get better at developing characters for my stories and screenplays, and it’s just been a fun way to express myself.” Emery took his first class in 2022 and is one of many community members who return for the creative spark.
