St. George Art Museum features fundraiser, exhibits, and events

On March 2, the St. George Art Museum’s 17th annual Soup ‘n’ Bowl fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For $25, participants receive a handcrafted ceramic bowl with lunch as well as admission to the museum. There will be a silent auction, $5 grab-bag bowls, drawings, and live music. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the museum, by calling (435) 627-4525, or by emailing museum@sgcity.org.

The museum is currently hosting three exhibits: Dana Russell’s “Metal Mash Up,” which will remain on display through May 18; Sayaka Ganz’s “Reclaimed Creations,” which will remain on display through April 28; and Milton Goldstein’s “Pristine Land” from the museum’s permanent collection.

In the Main Gallery is “Metal Mash Up,” an exhibit by recent transplant Dana Russell. He selects rusty chains, wheels, remnants of wrought iron, car parts, grids, needle-sized lines, beads, and discs. With significance, he welds various elements into abstractions. An almost musical and storied quality attends the pieces as if they are archaeological remnants that have been rediscovered from a past civilization.

In the Mezzanine Gallery is Sayaka Ganz’s exhibit “Reclaimed Creations.” Using various plastic pieces, she creates a wonderland of animals. Whether it is a bird, whale, or polar bear, each piece coalesces into a masterpiece of integration.

“Pristine Lands,” a gorgeously rich collection of photographs by Milton Goldstein, completes the three exhibits. There are now whole islands of plastic and garbage floating in the oceans and seas. Evoking the Western rugged terrain of great beauty, Goldstein allows one to focus on only the pristine land without trash during a time before massive mounds of trash on floating barges and, worst of all, plastic.

Every Thursday, the museum is open until 8 p.m. Visitors can explore exhibits, read, or play board games in the Adult Study Center and kids can enjoy the Family Discovery Center. Admission is free after 5 p.m.

Art Conversations is held at 7 p.m. and the Book Club meets at 4 p.m., both on third Thursdays. Upcoming Book Club selections for discussion are “Ancient Evenings” by Norman Mailer March 15 and “The Last of the Wine” by Mary Renault April 19. A poetry jam is held on fourth Thursdays at 7 p.m. SmART classes for kids are presented on second Saturdays at 10 a.m. The topics for March and April are “Bold! The Pop Art of Romero Britto” and “Amedeo Madigliani and Self-Portraits.” Admission is $3 per child. In the summer, art and culture classes return with the exploration of ancient Rome.

A teen night will be held July 20, a date night Aug. 17, and a singles’ night Dec. 7. The annual fashion designs and show competition will take place Nov. 11.
