St. George celebrates completion of Bluff Street reconstruction

By Kevin Kitchens

Public officials, project designers, construction workers, and community members are celebrating the completion of the Bluff Street reconstruction project while recognizing the cooperative efforts that will provide decades of service not only for traffic flow but also with upgraded utilities and new options for pedestrians and bicyclists.

While studied for several years, the project, valued at $42.2 million, was substantially constructed in less than a year on a delivery schedule accelerated through the use of state and local funds rather than federal funds.

On the surface, an additional lane in each direction and the inclusion of wider shoulders between 100 S and Sunset Boulevard will provide more capacity and mobility. UDOT anticipates an improvement in travel times with the addition of a free right turn for drivers going from St. George Boulevard north to Sunset Boulevard and a modified alignment with signals favoring the dominant traffic flow pattern moving between the two boulevards.

Below the surface, several significant utility upgrades will provide decades of service to St. George, including a new storm drain system on this segment of Bluff Street aligned for future storm drain expansion.

The project also features trail and transit connectivity as well as a pedestrian tunnel under State Route 18.

The project was constructed by Meadow Valley Contractors, the same construction firm which widened the I-15 bridges over the Virgin River the previous year.
