Due to the surge in local hospitalizations, the City of St. George has decided to cancel a number of events and sports tournaments.

St. George City Leaders Restrict Some and Cancel All City-Sponsored Events in November Due To Recent Spikes in COVID-19 Cases

St. George – In a rare, late-night press release yesterday, David Cordero, the Communications and Marketing Director for the City of St. George released an urgent albeit brief announcement with regards to several upcoming scheduled events.

“Due to the surge in local hospitalizations, the City of St. George has decided to cancel a number of events and sports tournaments. After consulting with healthcare providers, the City is temporarily restricting events that bring large numbers of people to our community.”

The canceled events include:

  • The Snow Canyon Half Marathon (Nov. 7)
  • The Skillz and Thrillz Challenge (Nov. 14)
  • The Seegmiller Farm Harvest Days & Turkey Trot (Nov. 21) and
  • The Kick-Off to Christmas & Santa Dash (Nov. 30) – along with many others.

This announcement comes as Washington County has seen an average increase of over 100 new COVID-19 cases per day and increasing, with 109 new cases in southwest Utah reported yesterday.

According to data available on the Southwest Utah Public Health Departments Website, there are now 1467 active cases in Washington County with 35 residents currently hospitalized putting significant pressure on our local healthcare providers.

As of October 28th, over 65,000 people have been tested in the 5 Counties that make up southwest Utah with an 18.9% positivity rate for the period of October 19th – 28th.

Utah is currently following new restrictions based on COVID-19 activity within our county.

Masks* and social gathering limits* of 10 people as mandated for counties rated as HIGH.

  1. Little late – and the statement better than nothing does not apply either. Kind of like the Titanic has already hit the iceberg, and add to that, all the emergency life boats are on the water sailing away. Not going to get into blame, we already know – Anti mask protest rallys, Facebook flashmob rituals at local grocery stores, and the Mom Code super spreader program are just the tip of the metaphorical Iceberg.
