State Auditor releases Information Systems Audit of The Department of Public Safety Driver License Division
By Nicole Toomey Davis
The Office of the State Auditor released its Information Systems Audit of the Department of Public Safety Driver License Division.
The audit is divided into two reports. The first report concerning Data Sharing Practices for the Driver License Division includes two key findings:
—The Driver License Division discloses driver license information not authorized in statute.
—The Driver License Division does not audit recipients of driver license information as permitted or required by established Memorandums of Understanding.
“From our perspective, the Driver License Division could take steps to better protect personally identifiable information,” said State Auditor John Dougall. “In an era when the security and privacy of personal information is already at significant risk, State agencies must be careful to limit sharing of information and must review compliance with the restrictions placed on the use and storage of sensitive information.”
The report may be found online.
The second report contains the results of the Information Systems Audit of the Driver License Database. Due to security restrictions, the office anticipates a public release of the second report in approximately six months, allowing the agency time to correct any issues identified in that report. A detailed report of those findings and recommendations has been provided to the Driver License Division management.
