Fall skies over Southern Utah set the stage for a lineup of community astronomy programs from Stellar Vista Observatory (SVO). The Kanab-based nonprofit is hosting a series of star parties, lectures, and special events designed to connect people with the cosmos in memorable ways.
Kicking Off at Coral Pink Sand Dunes
The season begins Friday, September 12, with a star party at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, part of the Southwest Astronomy Festival. Guests will gather on the park’s observation deck to see the constellations Scorpius and Sagittarius along with the glittering Butterfly and Ptolemy clusters. Saturn’s return to the evening sky adds a highlight. The program is free, with only a $5 per vehicle entrance fee for non-campers.

Exploring Astronomy and Wellness
On Thursday, September 25, SVO welcomes Dr. Troy Allan from Utah State University to Kanab. His lecture, “The Human Side of Astronomy,” explores how skywatching promotes mental wellness, awe, and community connection. The talk is free and begins at 7 PM at the Kanab City Library.
Desert Starlight in Kanab
For an immersive evening under the stars, SVO is hosting Desert Starlight on Friday, September 19, and Friday, September 26. The experience includes a catered dinner, astrophotography demonstrations, and guided telescope viewing of planets, nebulae, and distant galaxies. Tickets are $149 per person through Eventbrite at bit.ly/DesertStarlight2025.

International Observe the Moon Night
The season continues with International Observe the Moon Night on Friday, October 3, at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. Attendees can view the moon’s craters, mountains, and “seas” of ancient lava while learning about its history and geology. Like the September star party, the event is free with standard park entry.
Bringing Astronomy to the Community
Stellar Vista Observatory’s fall programming highlights its mission to make astronomy accessible and inspiring. By combining science, community connection, and hands-on experiences, the nonprofit encourages both beginners and seasoned skywatchers to discover the wonder of the night sky.
