“Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.”
On Friday, Aug. 5, southern Utah residents will have an opportunity to be excellent to each other as Streetfest’s George Dollar Movie proudly presents a screening of an undeniable ’80s comedy classic, “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” And for only $1!
Summer has almost come to a close, so George Streetfest is throwing a Back-to-School celebration you won’t soon forget. This fun-filled outdoor get-together will take place on Main Street in downtown St. George starting at 6 p.m. Festivities include live music, DJs, vendors, food trucks, and various activities for folks of all ages.
As an added bonus, Streetfest will continue its George Dollar Movie series over at The Electric Theater with a screening of this zany, infectiously likable comedy that’s in a class all by itself.
In this most triumphant bit of hilarity from 1989, Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves play Bill and Ted, a couple of lovable if slightly clueless San Dimas High School students whose only chance at graduating is by passing a most difficult history report. Through the aid of time-traveling Rufus (played by the great George Carlin), Bill and Ted zip through the past, collecting as many historical icons as they can, all in an effort to dazzle their history teacher. During their “excellent adventure,” this heavy-metal-loving duo discover that their rock outfit, Wyld Stallyns, might be of vital importance to the very future of humanity.
“Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” is light, amusing and — dare I say it — educational. It also benefits from a lively ’80s-infused soundtrack. Beyond that, Reeves and Winter are absolutely hilarious as our fearless leads. Their spaced-out behavior, colorful humor, and undeniable bromance paved the way for everyone from Wayne and Garth to Beavis and Butthead.
“Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” is the perfect movie to close out George Streetfest’s summer season. If you’ve never seen it before, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. If you have seen it, come on out and see it again with what is sure to be a most excellent crowd.
“Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” will be preceded by two locally made short films.
“Super Senior Citizen” (9 minutes)
This entertaining comedy short from filmmakers Lonie Black and Brandon Tippetts was put together for a local guerilla filmmaking challenge back in 2008. It tells the story of an elderly superhero out to rid his city of crime. Roderick Stephen Medigovich is a riot in the title role. This amusing short proves that you’re never too old to take out the garbage.
“Chocolate Cake” (8 minutes)
Shaun Labrecque puts his own spin on an ’80s classic in the form of “Chocolate Cake,” a wonderfully entertaining short about a dad who attempts to serve up the perfect breakfast for his children. The kids are positively adorable here, and the great Brodie Perry and the lovely Brooke Bang knock it out of the park as the parents. This winning short proves once and for all that you can have your cake and eat it too.
This most excellent night at the movies is sponsored by TDS Telecom and will be hosted by film fanatics Adam Mast and Bruce Bennett.
