SUMA hosts 26th annual art auction

By Emily Ronquillo

Celebrate an evening of art, community, and tradition as the Southern Utah Museum of Art presents its 26th annual art auction March 7 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Designed to be an “evening under the stars,” the event will be a celebration of the diverse beauty and history of the region while supporting the museum’s upcoming exhibitions and efforts to preserve the permanent collection. It will feature a wide variety of media including paintings, photographs, ceramics, fused glass, and sculptures. Past proceeds have allowed the museum to bring high-quality work of contemporary artists to its galleries such as Al Farrow’s “Wrath and Reverence” exhibition on display this past fall.

“Now that the museum is planning exhibitions two to three years in advance, the annual fundraiser is even more important as it helps us build an exhibition fund, allowing us to conduct research and pay deposits for exhibitions months or years in advance,” said Jessica Farling, director and curator of SUMA.

The evening’s festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with a social hour featuring live entertainment by folk/Americana band The Backyard Revival and another live painting by TJ Eisenhart. This will also mark the official start of the silent auction when guests will have the opportunity to bid on additional works of art. The silent auction will continue throughout the night’s program until winners are announced at 7:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres while perusing the artwork in the live auction before it begins at 6 p.m. During the live auction in SUMA’s main gallery, Das Nest will serve a delicious and unique dinner for guests to enjoy.

New this year, artwork up for auction will be on display in SUMA’s galleries for visitors to experience prior to the event. Artwork will be available for public view from Feb. 21 until March 6.

The auction once again features even more work from local and regional artists than in previous years. This year’s participating artists include Carol Bold, Eric Brown, Royden Card, Jenny Christiansen and Mike Ryan, Megumi Dold, TJ Eisenhart, Jeremy Fagergren, Nick Froyd, Susan Harris, Brad Holt, Brian Hoover, Willamarie Huelskamp, Mary Jabens, Brian Jorgensen, Andrew Kent-Marvick, Roland Lee, Coleton Lunt, Glen Lyman, Megan Marshall-Nelson, Marta Mitchell, Ann Mailee Oberhelman, Valerie Orlemann, Micah Player, Michael Plyler, Ron Rencher, Debbie Robb, Stewart Seidman, Kate Starling, Carol Stenger, Anna Tillett, Carrie Trenholm, Kim Twitchell, Robyn Twitchell, Stephen Van Handel, Katharine Villard, Diane Walsh, Robert Warren, Mona Woolsey, and Steve Yates.

Tickets are $50 for Friends of SUMA members and $75 for nonmembers. Registration is available at go.suu.edu/artauction.
